Kevin Winstead

Postdoctoral Fellow in State College, PA

Kevin is a Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Postdoctoral Fellow with the Center for Black Digital Research at Pennsylvania State University. He earned his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland and his M.A. in Sociology and B.S. in Business Marketing from Southern Illinois University. His current research interest centers around social movements, digital studies, the social construction of reality. Currently, Kevin is working on his forthcoming book manuscript Sankofa Cyberculture: Black Digital Activism and Disinformation.

Kevin's previous work focused on the mobilization dynamics of the civil rights movements and the subsequent Black Catholic sub movement. Kevin's work has appeared in journals including Ethnic and Racial Studies and Sociology Compass.

Previously Kevin served as Project Manager for the Andrew W. Mellon-funded Synergies: Digital Humanities and African American History and Culture (#AADHum) and the National Endowment for the Humanities supported Baltimore Stories: Narratives and the Life of an American City. Kevin taught as a Graduate Instructor for both the Sociology and American Studies departments, where he prepared courses on Black Social Movements, Popular Culture, and survey of cultural studies.

Kevin is a 2017-2018 All-Star Fellow. Kevin was the 2015-2016 Teaching and Learning Transformation Center Graduate Fellow, where his work focused on improving educational experiences for college-level classrooms. Kevin also served as President of Southern Illinois University's Black Alumni Group.
