Dr Daya Sharma

Dr Daya Sharma was born & raised in country NSW, before moving to Sydney to study medicine. He completed his Ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital & subsequently underwent fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, in his subspecialty interest areas of corneal, cataract & refractive surgery. His subspecialty training encompassed modern corneal grafting techniques (DSAEK, DALK & included laser-assisted corneal grafts), intracorneal ring segment implantation, corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), corneal laser refractive surgery (LASIK & PRK) & phakic intraocular lens implantation (eg ICL), & cataract surgery, particularly in corneal disease. He trained using multiple different laser refractive surgery platforms for correction of refractive errors.

Dr Sharma’s particular interests include management of astigmatism in cataract surgery using advanced corneal measurements, modern surgical management of keratoconus & other ectatic corneal diseases and management of corneal endothelial failure. He has expertise in multiple different types of refractive surgery, & is interested in management of complex cases, such as post-LASIK ectasia & high astigmatism after corneal transplant.

Dr Sharma graduated from UNSW with BSc (Med) Honours Class I, MBBS, having completed a year as a Visiting Research Fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre (Harvard Medical School) in Boston, researching transplantation immunology. He subsequently gained a Masters of Science by Research into corneal disease from the UNSW. He has multiple publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, including a major review of infections after laser refractive surgery. He is a regular scientific reviewer for the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery & Cornea (the Journal of The Cornea Society). He is also on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Keratoconus & Ectatic Corneal Diseases. He was also co-editor of a textbook for senior ophthalmic trainees. He was awarded a ESCRS Young Ophthalmologist grant to study biometry in Vienna, Austria with Prof Oliver Findl, a world expert.

Dr Sharma is a Member of the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (leading ophthalmologists & innovators of healthcare technologies). He is also a member of The Cornea Society, European Cornea Society, & the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).
