Elliott Bennett-Guerrero

Appointed in 2003 to Duke University Medical Center, Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, served as Director of Perioperative Clinical Research in the Duke Clinical Research Institute's Perioperative Therapeutic Area. Dr. Bennett-Guerrero investigated the etiology of postoperative complications during surgery. His research also probed the safety of blood transfusions, with the mission of identifying methods to reduce complications that affect high-risk patients. As Principal Investigator, he directed the $2 million National Institutes of Health study, "Impact of Blood Storage Duration on Physiologic Measures." He presented his research findings at national and international professional events, speaking on various topics reflecting his expertise, such as "Healthy Volunteers: A Model for Studying Red Blood Cell Duration of Storage." His peer-reviewed articles appear in major professional publications, such as The Journal of the American Medical Association, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Anesthesiology. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero also served as a peer reviewer of medical journal articles in his field. Today, Dr. Bennett-Guerrero functions as professor and vice chairman at Stony Brook Medicine.

Aside from his role as an academic researcher, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero teaches Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Duke University. He was appointed in 2008 to Professor of Anesthesiology with tenure. His clinical specialties include critical care, general anesthesiology, and cardiac anesthesiology. He holds certification in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography. He is certified in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero also holds certifications in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from The American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero appears in the NOVA television series Doctors' Diaries on PBS, which profiles the professional and personal journeys of seven Harvard medical students from 1987 to the present, with clips available at www.pbs.org. He has attained wide recognition in his profession, earning numerous honors. Duke University awarded him first place in the 1996 Richard Smith Memorial Award for Clinical Research. The Association of University Anesthesiologists elected Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero to full membership in 2002.
