I was born, raised and educated in the UK. All I ever wanted was to be a teacher. I received a joint BA (Hons) degree in English & Gender Studies from The University of Hull and spent 4 years in the 'real world'. I returned to The University of Hull to work for the Pro-Vice Chancellor and completed a PGDip in Management. I then went on to complete my PGCE in Secondary English with Media Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.
I taught in the UK for 6 years, then moved on to international schools in Qatar, Malaysia and Singapore before returning to Qatar. I am an advocate of personalised learning and have developed a strong ethos of innovative learning practices that foster independence and place responsibility in the hands of learners.
As a life-long learner, I recently commenced my MEd at UMUC, and have also gained certification in:
- Google Apps for Education
- Teaching English in the Secondary Mainstream Classroom
- Project Based Learning
- Flipped Classroom
- Chrome Classroom
- Digital Citizenship Education
- Flat Class
- Recently, I have taken courses on Learning Environments with Stanford University, and Digital Cultures with the University of Edinburgh. I am an examiner for CIE and IBO, and have been responsible for DP extended essay coordination and curriculum development. I spoke at a conference on literacy in Singapore in 2012, at the Google Summit KL 2013 and in Qatar in 2015 - about taking English teaching 'above the line'. I co-established the Twitter chat #satchatoc and established #satchatme and am Project Manager for the Flat Connections Global Youth Debates.
I believe we by being given the freedom to connect, explore and experiment with it. See my Blog and Twitter for more about my explorations in learning, reading and writing.
