Throughout his career, Mr. Shafer has dedicated himself to professional development. A Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS), he is a Fellow for the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists. Furthermore, Richard Shafer taught a series of CEBS courses at Boston University and has contributed to several CEBS textbooks. He also holds membership in the Society of Financial Service Professionals. Over the years, Richard Shafer has furthered his business education by attending several events and programs at the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Aspen Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering values-based leadership styles. Moreover, this Madison-based businessman has taken courses toward a Master of Business Administration at Boston University's Graduate School of Management. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University, where he studied English and history. Additionally, Richard Shafer spent five years serving as a chairman and board member for several of California State University committees, including its Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, and Foundation's Board of Governors. During his service to the institution's Foundation, Mr. Shafer worked directly with the university's chancellor. As the board's Vice Chairman, he collaborated with other community leaders to further the California State University’s mission and goals. A resident of Madison since 2005, Richard Shafer provides advisory services for retirement plan fiduciaries, specializing in nonprofit organizations and individuals with special needs. As Well and Good’s founder and retirement plan expert, he has worked with schools and colleges, both large and small, nationwide.
