In short, I'm an engineer who has had a life-long career in developing instrumentation for science. To be more precise, for radio telescopes that are used to help mankind understand it's place in the universe. In recent years I have worked on the realization of the next generation super radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will be built at sites in South Africa and Australia.
My past role, as chief site engineer, was first to assemble information on the suitablity of candidate sites, and next to help get the show on the road at the sites that were selected.
My professional work gives me the opportunity to travel the world. I bring my camera wherever I go. What I look for in images is artful and technical quality, even in common scenes. I have always called myself a landscape photographer, but I take pleasure in taking images of people as well, especially abroad. I search for intimate moments to capture, scenes that touch the photographer and those who view the image. I have been taking photos since my teens and continued to do so ever since. The camera's I've used range from small rangefinder camera's to reflex camera's from Nikon and Canon.
A good impression of my photo work can be found in my Flickr and 500px sites, see icons below. The background image on this page was taken by me on a flight from Beijing to Amsterdam. It is one of the all-time most popular images on Flickr, see here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/robmillenaar/39835554/ Other passions are glider flying, reading, jazz music and street running. With an active life like this it is hard to find the time.
