Sylvester Jones

A senior executive in law enforcement, Sylvester Jones brings over 27 years of experience to his position as Assistant Director of the Witness Security Division of the United States Marshals Service. He has over 24 years experience in federal law enforcement, including 15 years leading and directing nationwide witness, judicial, and prisoner security programs. Sylvester Jones began his career as a police officer and detective for the Markham Police Department, where he answered calls in a busy city just south of Chicago. From 1994 until 1996, Sylvester Jones served as the Supervisory Deputy Marshal for the District of Puerto Rico. He supervised the district’s seized asset program and ensured that his department coordinated with other federal agencies including the U.S. Attorneys Office.

He then accepted a position as Chief Inspector for the Prisoner Services Division of the United States Marshals Service Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. As part of his duties, he was responsible for managing multiple nationwide prisoner programs, including the Intergovernmental Agreement Program, the Prisoner Tracking System, the Cooperative Agreement Program (CAP), and the Conditions of Confinement Program. In 1999, Sylvester Jones became Chief Deputy of the United States Marshals for the Northern District of Georgia.

He was responsible for overseeing and providing support to 80 court security officers, 50 federal employees, and 40 judges. Along with his career in law enforcement that led to his current position with the United States Marshals Service, Sylvester Jones has an extensive military background in the United States Army Reserve and the National Guard. He was commissioned in 1983 and served for 22 years as an officer. He deployed to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991.

Sylvester Jones retired from the Armed Forces in 2005 as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving as the S-3 Operations Officer for the 260th Military Police Command, District of Columbia Army National Guard. Sylvester Jones belongs to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the United States Marshals Service Association (USMSA), and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). He regularly contributes to the Combined Federal Campaign, the Disabled Association of Veterans, So Others Might Eat (SOME), and The Salvation Army.
