Aurélio Manuel Valente

With more than 20 years of progressive experience in Higher Education Administration, Aurélio Manuel Valente serves as Dean of Students and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at Governors State University. As Dean of Students, Aurélio is the Chief Student Affairs Officer (CSAO) and contributes strategic planning and leadership as Governors State University transitions to a comprehensive residential public institution, the only in the Chicago Southland area with the admission of its first freshmen class and the development of campus student housing in 2014, and the establishment of a competitive intercollegiate athletics program.

Aurélio’s research interests include student development in the first year of college and the study of institutional efforts to promote student engagement and academic success. He has published several articles regarding service–learning, first year experience and ethics in higher education in the Journal of College and Character and served as a contributing chapter author for third and fourth edition of The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration. Aurélio earned his B.S. and MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, his M.Ed. from Suffolk University (MA) and his doctorate in Higher Education from The Florida State University.
