Birgitta Jonsdottir is a poetian currently serving as a member of parliament in Icelandic parliament for The Pirate Party. She was first elected to the Icelandic parliament in April 2009 on behalf of a political movement she helped create aiming for democratic reform via direct democracy, transparancy and accountability. She co-created the Pirate Party in Iceland in 2012.
She was the chief sponsor for IMMI – the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, tasking successfully the Icelandic government to make Iceland a safe haven for freedom of Information. She is now a chairperson for the International Modern Media Institute.
Birgitta has been an activist and a spokesperson for various groups, such as WikiLeaks, Saving Iceland and Friends of Tibet in Iceland.
Birgitta has served in the Foreign Affairs Committee, Environmental Committee, General Committee, Joint EU/Iceland Committee, Parliamentary Commitee for the Special Report in relation to the Icelandic Financial Crisis, Iceland delegation to the IPU and in the Nato Parliamentary Assembly.
