After starting a community weekly and working at dailies in Los Angeles and Chicago, Lavin spent two decades directing prize-winning coverage at The New York Times. For the next seven years, first as a top editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer then as managing editor of Forbes.com, Lavin developed an entrepreneurial approach to online media and led editorial initiatives that drove audience and revenue growth.

Lavin helped a community news startup, Main Street Connect, grow to more than 50 sites in three states. He provides strategic and communications advice as a consultant to other digital enterprises, including clearhealthcosts.com and katerva.org.
