Cecilia Landa-Avila

Researcher in East Midlands, UK

Cecilia is interested in delving into the complexity of contemporary global challenges to transition towards equitable, just and sustainable health and wellbeing societies. Her research interest stands at the intersections of systems thinking, participatory/shared-power design and design for equity and decolonisation.

Cecilia gained a BA in Industrial Design and an MSc in Ergonomics in Design at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico and a PhD in Health Systems Design at Loughborough University. Her experience spans academia (Assistant Professor/Lecturer), industry (User Experience Researcher) and government (Design for Social Services), which have granted her a holistic outlook of design research and practice from different viewpoints. Cecilia joined the School of Design and Creative Arts in 2017 as a Doctoral Researcher, and since 2019 has been involved in several research projects across public health, social innovation and design for wellbeing, such as IMMUNE (UKRI/AHRC) and Powering Productivity (ESRC).
As part of her Doctoral Research, she investigated the role of healthcare outcomes within systems thinking approach that could improve the design of health systems. She developed a multiple stakeholder mapping method that provides a sensemaking and negotiation space that integrate a network analysis to support system-level strategies.

Currently, Cecilia is a Research Associate in Health Systems Design in DECODE, a research funded by the NIHR Artificial Intelligence for Multiple Long-Term Conditions (AIM) Consortium. Her role focused on engaging with multiple stakeholders to codevelop AI scenarios for effective care coordination to improve the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities. Cecilia is also co-founder of RELAESA, a Latin American network of Ergonomics and Human Factors in Healthcare Systems, that brings together academics and healthcare practitioners to improve Latin American health systems and a member of the International Advisory Council of the Design Research Society (DRS).
