From memoir, Black Koi Tattoo: Chasing the Dragon -

Dear Sober Guy,

I’ve been wondering when you would come around. I have been lurking, ruining your life for so many years. It’s about time you put the bottle down and got yourself some help. Now, you will be able to do all the things you haven’t been able to do because of me. Your wife and kids are terrified of me, but I have a hunch they will like you once they finally meet you. Your writing and your music have improved since I went away. Your thoughts are clearer; your face is no longer bloated; your energy levels have increased. I kept you fat and complacent for so long, it was laughably easy to keep my foot on your throat. But look at you now. You have risen from the ashes, a first class Lazarus. The stink of death no longer spills from your pores. Your wife will be pleased when she breathes the essence of the man I was certain would be dead by New Year’s. Hold fast to that Higher Power of yours. You call him Jesus even while I baptized you daily in the filth and stink of a world I created for you. The baptismal pool has been refilled with the Water of Life. You will never thirst again. I seem to be out of a job now. You have stood up and have become the man your family needs. Your potential is unlimited. Can you see it now? I tried to blind you, drown you, kill you. Dust off those hurl encrusted dreams of yours. Go back to school, get your degrees; publish those books that keep spilling out of your pen. If you value anything – wife, kids, the breath in your lungs – pray you never see me again. I have caused you to do countless horrible things, but don’t forget you are not me, and I am not you. You always were the better half.
No Longer Yours,
Drunk Guy
