Hi, I'm Danielle. My hair looks like that on purpose.
I'm a writer, focused on narrative non-fiction, satire, and humor. My first book, Tales from Fish Camp, was published in 2004. I've since been featured in Rivet Magazine, Kitchen Sink Magazine, and the anthology Cringe: Teenage Diaries, Journals, Notes, Letters, Poems, and Abandoned Rock Operas, released by Crown Publishing and edited by Sarah Brown.
I've lived in Alaska, California, New York City, Boston, England, and Rhode Island. I grew up in Warwick, NY. I've driven across America a few times. I've lived in 22 separate dwellings and single-handedly kept the silverware tray manufacturing people in business. I've survived an abusive, drug-addicted stepfather, a welfare childhood, clinical depression, a bear chase, the fall of the World Trade Center while I worked in Manhattan for the United Nations, four Alaskan winters, junior high school, Aquanet hairspray, acid wash jeans, and the entirety of the Mets' 1987 season. I have no idea how to wear makeup. I've had very lengthy, important conversations about bread. I sometimes forget that I have freckles. I am very tall.
I went back to college in 2008 after a 12-year hiatus, and graduated summa cum laude in 2011 with degrees in English and Women's Studies. I am currently a graduate student and instructor at the University of Wisconsin in the Gender and Women's Studies program, where my work focuses on the intersection of race, gender, and class. I live with my husband in Madison. I also write Feminist Ryan Gosling.
