I am a partner with McInnes Cooper, where I practice internet law and advise clients on all aspects of Canadian privacy laws. I am the author of the Canadian Privacy Law Blog.

I am a former President of the Canadian IT Law Association and former Chair of the National Privacy and Access Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association.

I am the author of the popular Canadian Privacy Law Blog and the Canadian Cloud Law Blog. Through my YouTube channel, I provide educational and informative content about technology and privacy laws.

I regularly assist national and regional media outlets with commentary on developments in privacy and internet law, including CBC’s The National, CTV National News and Global National News. I am regularly quoted as an expert by publications such as McLean’s Magazine, Newsweek, the National Post, the Globe & Mail and others.

A significant part of my practice is advising clients on privacy law and other legal issues associated with cloud computing. I work with vendors and customers in connection with implementing cloud computing projects, in both the public and private sectors. I am known for being able to cut through the seemingly intractable issues related to cross-border data flows and law enforcement/national security access to customer data.

I am a member of the “downtown” faculty of Dalhousie Law School, where I teach Internet and Media Law, Law and Technology, and Law and Policy for Electronic Commerce. I am on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology. Active in the Halifax technology community, David on the board of Digital Nova Scotia.

David grew up in a Canadian foreign service family, living in exotic locales such as Egypt, Ghana, India, Sri Lanka, Washington DC, Romania and Ottawa.
