
Spanish-American violist Daniel McCarthy maintains an active career as an orchestral player, soloist, chamber musician, and teacher of violin and viola in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. He is currently completing a double-major Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance and Instrumental Music Education at the Catholic University of America. He has studied viola with Lisa Ponton, Tsuna Sakamoto, Katherine Murdock, and Patinka Kopec. As a versatile musician, he has performed with ensembles such as Opera Camerata of Washington (Associate Principal Viola), the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, the Washington Sinfonietta, the Symphony of the Potomac, the Washington Savoyards, the Landon Symphonette (Principal Viola), and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Solo engagements included performances of Vaughan Williams' Four Hymns for Tenor, Viola Obbligato, and String Orchestra with John Aler and the Apollo Chamber Orchestra (November, 2010), as well as Hindemith's Trauermusik with members of the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christopher Bowen (April, 2011). Mr. McCarthy also performs as violist of the Capitol Hill String Quartet. As an advocate for new music, he has debuted works by Michael Oberhauser, Robert Casals and Thom Huenger, who is currently writing a viola sonata dedicated to him. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA), and he maintains an active teaching studio.
A diverse musician, Mr. McCarthy's passion for music has extended into conducting. He is currently studying with Dr. Anna Binneweg, Music Director of the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, and completed previous studies with Dr. Michael V. Smith, David Searle, and Dr. Thea Kano. Mr. McCarthy plans to pursue a Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting in the Fall of 2012.
