Dee Stewart

Indigenous Relations Assistant in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

Hello!

My name is Dee Stewart and I am a proud non-binary member of the Nisga'a and Gitxsan Nations. My birth and legal name is Sandra Stewart and many may know me as such. However, I prefer to go by the name Dee and use they/them pronouns.

Born to a wonderful Gitxsan mother and Nisga'a father in Prince Rupert, BC, I see myself as a caring and compassionate person working towards a world where we learn about poverty, bigotry, and war in museums and not real life.

I'm expanding my knowledge and understanding of the world to do this effectively. Please feel free to share your knowledge with me :)

Due to various factors, I grew up in the foster care system in Vancouver, BC. Fortunately, my younger siblings and I wound up with a wonderful family with ties to the Gitxsan nation, who welcomed us as their own. I am proud to be able to say that I have two such loving families.

After working at a Transition House for women fleeing domestic violence for 4 years (2 years as Supervisor), I applied for the Indigenous Youth Internship Program with the Province of BC. Throughout the one-year program, I realized I would like to work in Public Administration. After the internship, I returned to the transition house program as a supervisor before taking a one-year health break. I am now an assistant to the Indigenous Relations team at BC Housing.

I have completed 3 years of studying Psychology, working towards my Bachelor of Arts Degree, and I hope to move forward to a Master's Degree in Public Administration or Business Administration.

In my free time, I love to read fantasy fiction, work on my bullet journal, read blogs on productivity and planning, and spend time with my siblings.
