A blogger since 1996, I made the jump from journalism (I was one of Computerworld's first online reporters) to social media in 2000, building and managing internal online communities for SGI, Palm and Intuit. In 2006 I shifted my focus to B2B social media, building and managing large, customer-facing online communities for Symantec, Cadence Design Systems and Ninety Five 5 as a community manager.

These days I hang my hat at Percona, the largest independent MySQL services company, as community manager. Percona provides MySQL support, consulting, development, and training services to customers worldwide including Groupon, Facebook, eBay, Craigslist, LivingSocial, and Box.

My wife, Noriko, and I live on 4.2 acres of beautiful land in Granville, Ohio -- making the transition from several years of city life in Tokyo and San Francisco to country living in 2011. Sort of like Green Acres. We have an abundant garden in summer, raise Harlequin and Baby Doll sheep. I also brew my own beer. Our family includes two dogs and two cats (all rescues). Life is good.
