Disty Winata

Vancouver x Jakarta. Usually anywhere in between.

At age 15, Disty Winata moved from Indonesia to Canada alone to continue her high school studies. Coming from Jakarta with a completely different culture, Disty struggled to adjust her new life and so did her peers. Ever since then, she committed to assist her female friends and embrace multiculturalism. In 2009, Disty along with her friends mentored for ‘Opportunities’, a program for girls from immigrant families whose cultural and personal backgrounds prevent them from participating in social and community events.

Disty has been honored as Indonesian Youth Representative at the UN Assembly for Millennium Development Goals, Indonesian Youth Sherpa at the 2011 G8-G20 Youth Summits, a Global Changemaker from the British Council, a Google Zeitgeist Young Mind winner and Indonesian representative at the 2012 G(irls)20 Summit.

Currently wearing many hats: Project Co-Lead at TEDxSFU, Health Promotion Coordinator at SFU Club for the Cure, Youth Focal Point at the UN HLP Bali Meeting on Post-2015 Development Agenda, jack-of-all-trades in G20 Youth Indonesia and TECBA with SFU School of International Studies.

Today, Disty is a third year student at Simon Fraser University studying Health Science and International Studies. In her spare time, she blogs for the Huffington Post, goes to music concerts and takes photographs.
