Douglas Therrell

North Carolina

Douglas Therell North Carolina is a seasoned artist, teacher, and businessman. His love of music is a family tradition—his mother and aunts were musically inclined—and at age five, when his aunts introduced him to big band swing artists, Doug was hooked.

Therrell took private voice and piano lessons. In the span of one year he went from student to performer, singing solos in local musical reviews and was the lead singer in operettas. By age 13, he made live television appearances at WBTV in Charlotte, NC. He also began playing the trumpet with adult dance bands at conventions and other engagements. At 16 Doug established his own dance band, playing gigs at high school proms, country club balls, and galas at Camp Lejeune.

His high school musical accomplishments are equally impressive. Therrell was a student conductor, band president, drum major and male lead choral singer at Myers Park High School.

Therrell received his MA degree at 23 and two months later became a music faculty member at Mars Hill College, where he was the youngest faculty member in its history. He taught voice, produced and directed operas, musicals, and conducted the orchestra and brass choir.

At 25, Doug performed a solo voice recital at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. He performed at concerts and collaborated with national and internationally known professionals. He was managed by Celebrity Artist of New York and his vocal coach was Hal Worthington, who coached Metropolitan opera stars.

Yet, Therrell is as brilliant in business as he is in music.

Upon resigining his position at Mars Hill College in the early 1970s,Therrell's insurance industry career began. He joined the Hartford, Conneticut-based Travelers Insurance Company to work on its new national program, becoming one of the national leaders out of the Charlotte, North Carolina office. He later founded an independent insurance agency based in Charlotte NC, acquiring national accounts and clients in more than 40 states.

In subsequent decades, Therrell applied his teaching and business skills to co-found the Self Effectiveness Learning Laboratory Inc. (S.E.L.L.). Later, he become successful in the banking industry, and more recently, established in 2012 a company which purchases and resells or rents foreclosed single-family homes.

Today, Douglas Therrell is as talented and creative in the business arena as he was on stage and in the classroom.
