Dr. Alawashez

Dr. Abdulrahim Alawashez is a notable general surgeon who currently practices at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. With expertise in general surgery and particular expertise in the area of advanced gastrointestinal and endoscopic surgery, Dr. Alawashez is a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada and the United States Medical Board, and, in addition, has earned a number of medical certificates during the course of his career, including an American Board of Surgery certificate and a Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship certificate.

Dr. Alawashez is a member of several medical societies, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Dr. Alawashez earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. Following a medical internship in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Alawashez then began his postgraduate medical training by completing a five-year residency in general surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Having successfully completed this residency, Dr. Alawashez then supplemented his postgraduate medical training by completing two clinical endoscopy-focused fellowships and clinical Minimal invasive surgery including weight loss surgery and endoscopy-focused fellowships at Cleveland clinic in Cleveland Ohio.

Over the years, Dr. Alawashez has participated in a host of surgical-focused workshops and is also a regular speaker on surgery topics. He regularly travels to medical functions such as the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress and the Annual Refresher Course in General Surgery as a way to maintain his knowledge on the most current and effective surgical methods and principles.

In addition to his current general surgeon position at St. Martha’s Hospital, Dr. Alawashez also serves as an assistant professor in general surgery at Dalhousie University and is active as an Emergency Response Unit Delegate for the Canadian Red Cross. Dr. Alawashez is also a current principle investigator in protocol and instrument development at the Surgery Department at Dalhousie University.
