A recent recipient of the Honor Award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, skilled ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Richards has maintained a private practice in Shreveport, Louisiana, since 1980. He joined the Highland Clinic in 2003, and also attends patients at Richards & Hinrichsen Pediatric Eye Specialists, a practice in Shreveport, Louisiana, with three additional locations. Dr. Alan Richards received his pre-medical training at Rice University in Houston and completed medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Upon graduation, he spent half a decade honing his skills in field positions, including an internship with Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, a residency in ophthalmology at Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital and University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center, and a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In his private practice, Alan Richards, M.D., applies his training and experience to the treatment of various conditions. In addition to performing routine consultations that evaluate the retina, visual acuity, and ocular alignment, he diagnoses and treats a number of vision problems, including lazy eye, droopy eyelid, tear duct obstruction, and crossed eyes, as well as complex strabismus syndromes and genetic disorders affecting the eye. Dr. Richards has performed research on glaucoma and many studies on retinopathy of prematurity, an affliction that causes blindness in premature infants. In addition to his work with patients, he guides developing physicians as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Committed to helping people across the globe, Alan Richards, M.D., serves as Chairman of Shreveport Sees Russia LLC, a non-profit institution that works to preserve the eyesight of premature infants in Russia and Eastern Europe.
