Emily Stockert

I am a sophomore at the University of Georgia, originally from a suburb outside of Atlanta. I am currently studying special education with the intention of becoming a special education teacher. My desire to teach special education stems from the relationship I had in high school with the family of one of my close friends, who's sister was severly autistic. When I entered college I thought I was going to study journalism, but it soon became clear that my passion was teaching as I found my volunteer work at after school tutoring programs more fulfilling. Due to the experience I had in high school I was inspired to pursue a career in special education.

Besides teaching, one of my other passions is traveling. I feel extremely lucky to have grown up in a family that not only encouraged but could provide me with the opportunity to experience new places and cultures. I have been an exchange student in Japan, a mission worker in Haiti, taken a road trip to Canada, skied in the Swiss Alps, scuba dove in Mexico, celebrated Christmas in Westminster Abbey and New Years Eve by the Eiffel tower, and been to 47 out of 50 states in the US (I haven't made it to North Dakota, Deleware, and Minnesota yet). This summer, my minor in Spanish will take me to Cádiz, Spain for six weeks.
