Gene Boner

Working for the Hastings Police Department since 1989, Gene Boner is currently the Services Division Captain. Serving in this role since 2003, Captain Boner is responsible for directing the training of all staff members, overseeing the maintenance of facilities and vehicles, and managing the emergency dispatch center. Captain Boner also maintains the Hastings Police Department computer system which includes over 50 workstations, laptops, five servers, and a 4.8 GHz wireless network.

Before acting as Services Division Captain, Gene Boner also served as Operations Captain, Police Lieutenant, and Police Sergeant for the Hastings Police Department. As Operations Captain, he managed the investigative and patrol divisions and was responsible for overseeing procedures. From 1995 to 1997, Gene Boner supervised shifts of up to six officers at a time, managed employee schedules, and conducted evaluations for police department staff members. In 1994, he earned the Police Officer of the Year award.

Gene Boner also serves as an Adjunct Instructor for the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, and since 2005 he has taught an introductory course on criminal justice at Central Community College in Hastings. Captain Boner holds professional affiliations with the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Chiefs Association of Nebraska, and he is the current Nebraska Chapter President for the FBI National Academy Associates.

He completed a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the Grand Island campus of Bellevue University and also trained in Quantico, Virginia, for the 201st session of the FBI National Academy. Before becoming a law enforcement officer, he attended Hastings College where he studied Elementary Education and belonged to the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity Football Concert Band.

Active in his community, Gene Boner belongs to Grace United Methodist Church and the Nebraska Foster and Adoptive Parent Association. He and his wife have hosted foster children for over 12 years. Outside of work, he enjoys camping and spending time with his family.
