The main element of the music of the Budapest-based ensemble is contemporary, Central-European, urban poetry; this makes them outstanding and genuine among the bands setting poems to music. They conjure live music from today’s living poetry, and their interpretation of the poems of dead poets they play in their concerts become modern. Balázs Radványi, member of the world-famous Kaláka Ensemble, the pioneers of the genre wrote: “the members of Göncölszekér are determined to keep their fingers on the pulse of modern times and to perform typical urban songs”. Their aim is to reach wider and wider audiences, giving them the pleasure of today’s poetry and music, while keeping track of the new trends of contemporary culture. One of the most important subjects of the selected poems is urban life and atmosphere; therefore, their variegated tone and sound is influenced by traditions such as jazz, French chansons and blues. The pieces are performed by the four members of the band and are written for four voice parts and acoustic instruments (mandolin, banjo, accordion, guitar, acoustic base guitar, guitar, recorders, whistles, concertina). In addition to giving their own concerts, the length of which varies from thirty minutes to one and a half hours, they also perform at larger events, festivals, as well as poetry recitals, presentations of newly published books and opening ceremonies of exhibitions.
