I work (with many others) on creating an unobtrusive coded reality so that we can augment our natural worlds. My thesis work can be found at pixels.media.mit.edu. It is one way of thinking about how to use ordinary devices like displays and cameras to transmit data that we humans don't find visually obtrusive.

We all need to think about how we can move away from our laptops and back into the physical world. Think about all of the things you do on your laptop that aren't work-related: facebook, amazon, craigslist. What would those activities look like if they didn't live on your 2D screen? We can create tools that help us reconnect with the physical world and also with each other
