Hanging Judas

Many people consider HangingJudas to be a Canadian version of the Duffel Blog, the satirical website identifying absurdity within the US military. This, of course, is false, and a mere result of propaganda spread by those who still believe that: the War of 1812 resulted in an American victory, and that Nickelback is a quality rock band.

HangingJudas was first conceived long prior to the invention of the Internet and first published in print by Sub-Lieutenant Jude Aston of HMCS RAINBOW in 1911. Aston, a charismatic young officer was keen on exposing the internal scandals plaguing Navy. He was eventually court martialled for libel, accusing the CFB Stadacona Band’s tuba player of practicing on the shores of the harbour narrows in December of 1916, disrupting sound signals of passing merchant ships, and inadvertently causing a collision that led to the Halifax Explosion.

Young Jude Aston was subsequently found guilty of the charges and hung from the yardarm of RAINBOW while the tuba player in question read Aston’s accusing article aloud in a mocking tone. This historic Naval event is sometimes referred to as the reading [in] RAINBOW.

HangingJudas pays homage to this event and its importance to the tradition of insightful, unbiased journalism. In fact, it was the hard hitting, nose grinding reporters of HangingJudas who first broke the story that Jean Chretien’s abstention from the Iraq War was due to intelligence reports of Saddam Hussein being a Montreal Canadiens fan.

In all seriousness though, this is all a joke: Satire written with the objective of providing a humorous view of Naval and military absurdity and stereotypes. Although the names of some units, ships, or celebrities may be real, all Naval personnel and events mentioned in these articles have no basis of truth. Any similarities to actual events or persons are merely coincidental and not of malicious intent.

For actual news concerning Canada’s West Coast Fleet, please consult The Lookout newspaper. Although I would contend that our stories are way better than theirs.
