Horatio Major

Math teacher Horatio Major has spent much of his life trying to help young people succeed both in and out of the classroom. Over the course of his four years teaching at the Silver Lakes Middle School in North Lauderdale, Florida, Horatio Major has earned an outstanding reputation, known by staff, students, and parents as a concerned, dedicated teacher who produces results. He was recognized in 2008 for showing the school’s highest increase in scores. Every year he has helped the students who score in the bottom quartile on their Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) experience gains of 75 percent or higher. He works with students with learning disabilities or emotional disturbances in an inclusive setting. A passionate sports enthusiast, Horatio Major is the school’s basketball and track coach. Horatio Major also works with Champion Learning Educational Services, LLC, providing tutoring to students who need extra assistance. Before going into teaching, Horatio Major earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and went into quality control for a number of companies. He developed the testing procedures for the Sentry Supplement Company, located in Opa-Locka, Florida. He subsequently became the group leader for quality control at Elan Transdermal Technologies, Inc., in Miramar, Florida. Three years later, he worked in a similar position for Schering-Plough in Miami Lakes, Florida. During his time with Schering-Plough, Horatio Major was a Managing Partner of KMN Sports, working with their flag football league. Horatio Major takes his support for young people a step further by donating his time to the R.E.A.L. Team’s bike drive and football clinic. He is a Commissioner of the Opa-Locka Optimist Club, Inc., and a Commissioner for the South Florida Flag Football Association. For five years, Horatio Major has been a member of the Broward County Basketball Officials Association (BCBOA).
