Librarian, Instructional Designer, and Author in Dallas, Texas
My name is Amanda Hovious. I am a librarian with experience in both academic and public libraries. I earned my MLIS from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and completed a second master's degree in Instructional Design and Technology from the University of North Dakota in 2015. In the fall of 2016, I will continue my studies at the University of North Texas, pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Information Science.
Formal training in instructional design has given me a new perspective on the emerging and evolving skills of librarianship--especially academic librarianship. As a result, I strongly advocate for the need to bring instructional design and technology into the library field as an avenue for new librarianship, or blended librarianship.
My research interests include game-based learning and transmedia storytelling, both of which are great for developing the new literacies. My recently published book, Transmedia Storytelling: The Librarian's Guide (2015, Libraries Unlimited) delves into the topic, and provides step-by-step instructions for implementing a variety of transmedia-rich library programs.
