IB Designs began in the year 2005, when life, circumstances and the economy had all come together to make for a dismal, limited outlook. One of us grew up in the Midwest, the other on the East Coast, but we'd both learned to appreciate the American Dream. That dream encompasses the conviction that anyone is free to improve their life and circumstances. Life is what you make of it, and with inspiration, work, determination and a bit of luck, people can accomplish wonders.
We began with the name. Stuck with what appeared to be limited options, we envisioned a time when we would once again have choices and maneuvering room. We would reach for the stars, designing our own lives, knowing that our creative imagination was infinite. And beyond. And that we would do it all here in the United States. We created Infinity & Beyond, hoping to find a great product we could sell. >From there it became IB Designs, USA.
EBay and e-commerce were growing, and we understood that although we might be a tiny company with a niche product, the Internet offered world-wide visibility and distribution outlets. We could compete with any other business, without being constrained by local geography. Our only problem was finding that product.
As initial product ideas languished, we eventually came up with the idea of nautical signal flags. They're historic, colorful, interesting, made up of geometric patterns, and each flag stands for a letter in the alphabet. We could make secret messages, offer a cool nautical decoration, make a reproducible item, and sell each flag at a reasonable price. The problem was the geometric patterns.
Since then, we've invented many new sewing methods, using metal- and wood-working techniques to make precision designs with cotton and thread. Our flags are within a sixteenth of an inch in their exactness, and whenever we hit a limit, we designed a way to go beyond that limit.
It's taken time and patience, but little by little we've moved forward. We look around and see countless other microbusinesses, many of which are offering unique products, hand-crafted with a quality you don't see much anymore in mass-produced items.
