Jan-Carel Koster

Voorthuizen The Netherlands

Jan-Carel Koster has always sculpt in wood and works in his studio in the Netherlands (Voorthuizen). His desire to sculpt was created in his early childhood because, like every human being, he tried to discover and understand not only himself, but also the world. His quest and life experiences have now become his motivation that he not only imagines in his wooden sculptures but also in other materials, especialy in stone. The sculptures created in his mind continued to grow. ‘He wants to share human feelings, his iconic abstract shapes’. His imagery is especially recognizable for its organic, revolving lines. In his sculptures he combines playing with feeling and technique, which is expressed in smooth thin and open forms. While sculpting he feels with his eyes. It's a game he plays where he uses a combination of cooperation with his hands, eyes and mind. The result of a creative process in his mind with the accompanying form. This process is the connection of that experience working with human emotions. The emotions he feels and sees in himself and others, he translates into shapes with a relationship to nature. From this sense guide, he let commence lively, harmonious, cohesive forms. It is a pursuit of the perfect form, from the reality to the abstract. Nature in its origin, interwoven with a human emotional guide. He tries to answer the question: how is a human being and his feelings in relation to nature occur? And where are these feelings lead to? This quest of the sculptor Jan-Carel Koster characterized his ability to empathize, by feel, then making and then to test his feelings to others. A dividing line is drawn between his autonomous work and his works on commission In his last works, his unique quest becomes more and more visible. A quest that will last a lifetime.
