Jason Stephenson

ELA Director in Edmond, Oklahoma

I am the Director of Secondary English Language Arts for the State Department of Education for Oklahoma.

I was a teacher at Deer Creek High School in Edmond for eleven years. I taught Creative Writing 1 & 2, reading for fun, English 2, and Pre-AP English 2. Before that, I taught 7th & 8th grade literature at Deer Creek Middle School for two years.

I served on the committee in charge of writing new English language arts standards for Oklahoma. After completing the Oklahoma Writing Project summer institute in 2009, I became an OWP teacher consultant. I've traveled around the state presenting workshops for teachers on writing across the curriculum, assessment, the six traits of writing, technology integration, and Common Core. Does your school need some professional development on teaching writing? I'm your guy! Want to read some of my writing? My article on spoken word poetry is in the Spring | Summer issue of the Oklahoma Humanities magazine.

At Deer Creek High School, I was a student council sponsor. We organized the annual Wonderful Week of Fundraising (WWF) every March. In 2018, we raised over $130,000 for Project 31, which helps women emotionally heal from breast cancer.

I enjoy recreational running, breakfast foods, and reading and writing poetry. On most Wednesday nights, you can find me at Red Dirt Poetry in the Paseo.
