Jestine Abella

Speech Language Pathologist in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO). I have a double major in Psychology and Linguistics (with High Distinction), and I completed my Master of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Toronto.

I currently practice in the school board setting, providing direct assessment, intervention, and consultation in the areas of oral receptive and expressive language, social communication, early literacy and phonological awareness, articulation and phonological disorders, and motor speech disorders including childhood apraxia of speech and stuttering.

Qualifications:

  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
  • Introduction to PROMPT (PROMPTS for Restructuring Oral Muscular for Phonetic Targets)
  • The Motor Speech Training Program (Phase I)
  • Advanced Literacy Practice - Speech-Language and Audiology Canada

Before this role, I practiced in the medical setting, providing assessment and treatment services in acute care (dysphagia) and inpatient rehabilitation units. I have extensive experience working with patients and families affected by stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Parkinson's disease. I also provided assessment, interventions, and counselling services for patients in the ICU settings (tracheostomy/ventilator dependent), and patients whose goals aligned with palliative and comfort care.

Outside of my job, I have a passion for physical and mental health and wellness. I enjoy strength training, playing beach volleyball, and stand-up paddleboarding. I maintain a consistent mindfulness practice, and I believe this helps me be more grounded, compassionate, and intuitive in my professional and personal life.
