Jonah Roll

San Francisco, Ca.

Jonah’s work is a combination of traditional oil painting techniques and mix media assemblage. Utilizing found wood and repurposed objects, often boat parts, he creates ships, sea creatures, and nautical images.

Jonah was born and raised on a 45-foot sailboat, The Flying Walrus, in Honolulu, Hawaii. At the age of 12, he moved to the Big Island, where the mythology and natural world of Hawaii saturated his formative mind.
In 1989, Roll received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in print-making from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.

Influenced by his watery beginnings, his love for boats and nautical lore Jonah’s work takes the viewer on a journey to surreal destinations, suffused with imagery imbedded in an original and stylized reality, often peopled with characters that range from the grotesque to the majestic.

He has created artworks for the public and many of his pieces are included in private collections. His work has been exhibited in Hawaii, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Washington D.C., and New York.

Recent works can be seen a year during San Francisco's Open Studios at Project Artaud, a San Francisco artists' community in the Mission District.
You can also find his work at the Ships Store100 bay street Sausalito Ca.
