Jonathan Van Parys

Short bio & side-projects

Jonathan Van Parys picture

I'm Technology Lead at Semetis, where I oversee the development of our data-rich applications - we use APIs, dataviz and datamining to make sense of data from the web. Before that, I worked as an Economist at IBM, advizing multinationals on where to locate their operations, and in mathematical modeling at SAS, helping large organizations make the most of their data.

My about.me page covers my side-projects.

Where's My Villo?
I set up Where's My Villo? to push for improvements to Brussels' bike-sharing scheme - the site uses real-time data to rate Villo! stations. For more, see my guest post for the Open Knowledge Foundation.

Optimal capital of Europe
I recently co-authored a paper on the optimal capital of Europe. Taken up by media around Europe, it's listed as background reading by the Brussels-Strasbourg Study Group.

HackDemocracy
I coordinate HackDemocracy meetups in Brussels - our motto is "innovations for more democracy". Drop me a line to speak at a meetup; we welcome anything that mixes technology and democracy. I am also involved in the organization of the G1000, a large-scale experiment in deliberative democracy.

Languages in Belgium
I co-authored a short empirical paper about languages in Belgium a while ago. A legislation proposal calling for sub-titling on television quotes it.

Bits & pieces
I love making pizza (cooked in my home pizza oven)
