I am a freelance writer, editor, and teacher based in Durango, Colorado. My essays, features, and book reviews have appeared in a variety of national and regional newspapers and magazines, and I have been an editor of several of magazines and online news sites.

For ten years, I was a writer and editor in the Marketing & Communications Department at Fort Lewis College. I have also taught writing at the college level since 1991 and instructed writing workshops on a variety of topics for everyone from kids to adults.

I have authored three books about living and parenting in the modern American West:

"The Monkey Wrench Dad: Dispatches from the Backyard Frontline" (Raven's Eye Press, 2008)

"Why I'm Against It All: Rants and Reflections" (Raven's Eye Press, 2003)

"A Wilder Life: Essays from Home" (Kivaki Press, 1995)

Outside of writing, I am a black belt in Shotokan karate-do and am lead instructor with the Durango Karate Club. Through the Club, I also offer "Dojo Viejo," a martial arts-based bodyweight training program for adults and seniors.
