Kevin Sun

Jamaica Plain, MA

I'm a saxophonist, improvisor, composer, and writer.

I've performed primarily with two bands: Great On Paper (GOP), a traditional quartet, and Earprint, a chordless quartet with trumpet and tenor saxophone on the front line.

I write for my own blog on jazz and related matters, A Horizontal Search, as well as Jazz Speaks, the official blog of The Jazz Gallery, not-for-profit jazz cultural center in New York City. In the past, I've spoken with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Ben Wendel, Steve Lehman, and Linda Oh, among others.

I graduated in 2014 from Harvard College with an A.B. in English. My senior thesis was a collection of nonfiction essays about jazz and improvisation entitled “‘Making the Hang’ and Other Essays on Being a Young Improvisor." In college, I also worked for a time as an associate editor of Fifteen Minutes, the magazine of The Harvard Crimson. I learned where one should put commas and em dashes, that sort of thing.

I'm currently studying at The New England Conservatory of Music as part of the Harvard-NEC joint degree program, working toward a Master of Music (M.M.) degree in Jazz Performance. During my time at NEC, I've studied with Miguel Zenón, Jerry Bergonzi, Donny McCaslin, Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, John McNeil, Ken Schaphorst, and Luis Bonilla.

I'm interested in the present and future of jazz, Black American music, creative improvised music, and music in general. I'm also interested in the present and future of journalism, fiction, nonfiction (creative or otherwise), education, and other generic 20-somethings' banter.
