Scientist, Sailor, & Explorer. "scientia ducti, eligimus venustam, veritam et abundantiam" Dr Lucy Gilliam is an Environmental Scientist with a BSc (1st), in Biological Sciences and a Phd in Microbial Ecology & Soil Science.
Lucy worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at Rothamsted Research before joining the UK Civil Service to work as science advisor. Her portfolio of work consisted ecotoxicology including endocrine disruptors, nanotechnology, heavy metals, climate change, biodiversity and sustainable food production.
Lucy is an experienced speaker having presented at conferences, universities and governance institutions around the world. She consults globally on wide range of environmental and food related topics.
Lucy is Founder and Director of eXXpedition, an all women's voyage to make the unseen seen, from the toxics in our bodies to toxics in our seas. Aboard the science research vessel Lucy and her crew raced from Lanzarote to Martinique in November 2014 researching marine plastic debris and toxics while exploring the links between this pollution and the products we consume. The aim is to inspire innovations for a clean green planet.
Lucy helped found New Dawn Traders, a partnership of Artists, Scientists, and Chefs re-imagining global trade by sail power. She sails regularly on the sail cargo vessel Tres Hombres Ship.
Lucy has sailed all her life and represented Exeter University in British University Sailing Association Championships as well as leading the University Club as Commodore in her final year of studies. She is an experienced Yacht racer and has crossed the Atlantic many times.
