MACK MYERS

Oxford, Ohio, United States

As I entered my freshman year of college at Miami University, I had little knowledge about my own skills and aspirations. Then naive, I began chasing careers that had the highest payoff, even though those careers were not at all a good fit for myself. From biochemistry to mathematics to professional writing, I have taken classes that develop skills in every category. It wasn't until the fall of 2014 where I really took the time to find the right fit.

I sat down in the library one day to study for a math test when I began thinking about myself, my life, and my future. I realized that I wasn't cut out for theoretical math, I don't want an entry-level corporate job, and I love to think freely without people always looking over my shoulder.

"You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards." - Steve Jobs

As I reminisced on my life up to this point with hopes of connecting the dots, I thought about what I am actually good at, what I enjoy doing, and what I could continue doing for the rest of my life so that I can wake up with a smile on my face. All of the answers to these questions led me to realize that I have the aspirations, personality, skill set, and passion of an entrepreneur/innovator/problem solver.

After connecting the dots to my life, I was able to turn it around for the better. I changed my major one last time, I earned an awesome internship with a startup accelerator to challenge my skills, and I have been elected by my peers to take over the Miami Entrepreneurship Organization.

Each day, I get inspired by my own story, which allows me to expand on my experiences, become open to new opportunities, and continue on the path of changing the world.
