Marcelo Kuperschmit, MD

With expertise in minimally invasive surgery to treat hernias, breast cancer, and varicose veins, Marcelo Kuperschmit, M.D., delivers high-quality surgical procedures at Metropolitan Surgical Associates PC and Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia. Possessing nearly four decades of surgical experience, Dr. Kuperschmit completed a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery. Recognized as the first surgeon in Virginia to perform a laparoscopic cholecystotomy (removal of the gallbladder), Marcelo Kuperschmit, M.D., went on to refine his skills as a laparoscopic surgeon, becoming highly proficient in a technique known as balloon dissection.

Balloon dissection, an approach that Marcelo Kuperschmit, M.D., uses in laparoscopic hernia repair, allows the surgeon to see into the abdominal cavity through the use of a diminutive camera, essentially a narrow tube connected to a video monitor. The technique, which requires three tiny incisions, leads to a more rapid recovery and reduced post-operative pain for the patient. Dr. Kuperschmit has successfully performed over 1,000 of these procedures in order to treat hernias, which result from a tear or weakness in the abdominal wall.

Marcelo Kuperschmit, M.D. obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Buenos Aires in his native Argentina in 1972. After graduating, Dr. Kuperschmit completed two surgical residencies. He became Chief Resident at Georgetown University Hospital. In addition, he completed a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery. Highly experienced, Dr. Kuperschmit served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center from 1998 to 2005. He has also applied his expertise as a Clinical Instructor at Georgetown University since 1981. Licensed to practice medicine in Virginia He holds membership in the American College of Surgeons.
