I have gardened for decades, in all kinds of climates. I've grown thousands of plants and killed a few along the way. I am the Gardening Guide for About.com, part of the New York Times Company. I also write Practically Gardening, which focuses on learning to garden without the fuss and fads.

I am a former Cornell Cooperative Extension Horticulture Educator and the former owner of Yore Vegetables, an heirloom seedling nursery.

My first  book "The Beginners Guide to Heirloom Vegetables" (Publisher Timber Press) is coming out in December 2011.
