I’m a freelance digital product designer and creative director working with big and small organizations making an impact.

I specialize in working with startups, having helped early-stage companies such as Thanx, where I designed the product experience and brand; and Fitbit (bought by Google), where I helped the fledgling wearables company grow from 8 employees to over 80 in its first 2 years. I’ve helped other startups get on their feet too, like Cloudera, Bridgestream (bought by Oracle), and Identified (bought by Workday). Before that I spent five years redesigning various online properties for CNET Networks and CBS Interactive.

I also specialize in working with nonprofits of all sizes, having worked with the Gates Foundation, Moore Foundation, Packard Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Amnesty International, Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, DarkSky International, and many smaller ones.

I’ve freelanced for two decades and founded two design firms.

In other forms of this life I am / have been:

• Historian at the Bay Area Action History Project
• Managing Editor of The Heinlein Journal
• Board member for AIGA’s St. Louis Chapter
• Partner in the design firm Flux51
• Mentor to teens in Bay Area Action’s High Schools Group
• Board member for Bay Area Action
• Board member for Acterra
• Leader of the Headwaters Forest Project
• Charter member of the Northern California Chapter of the Graphics Artists’ Guild
• Designer for the City of Palo Alto
• Editor and Publisher of the rock ’n’ roll publication Western Front News

...and a few other things. For a complete list, see my LinkedIn profile.
