Marty Burns

Marty Burns grew up in Fort Wingate, east of Gallup, New Mexico, and earned both a BFA with an emphasis in Art History, Theory, and Criticism and a MFA in Studio Art through the Fiber and Material Studies department from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2009, Burns received the Artists Fellowship Award from the Illinois Arts Council, and left the artist assistanship of Nick Cave and began to pursue teaching. She has been a Teaching Artist for all ages, with a focus on youth outreach, she has taught at the Hyde Park Art Center, Marwen, and most recently The Smart Museum of Art, at the University of Chicago. She has participated in multiple group exhibitions, fairs, charity auctions and projects including Chicago Artists Month featured sites like Art Here, Art Now in Hyde Park and Art Loop Open. She and her work have been pictured and discussed in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Reader, and various smaller, local, and online publications. In 2011, Burns was one of the 10 artists selected for the first cycle of the Chicago Artists Coalition’s BOLT residency program; during which time she mounted her first solo exhibitions. She was most recetly exhibited in the Whitney Biennal, and is currently in Gallup, NM exhibiting regularly and leading youth workshops for the monthly Gallup Art Crawl, and is working on a series of art and science integrated projects for school and event presentations.http://visualcv.com/martyburns
