Matthew Moten

Following a 31-year career in the United States Army, where he reached the rank of Colonel, Matthew Moten continues his efforts to provide educational documentation in his specialized field of American civil-military relations. The recipient of a Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, and four Meritorious Service Medals, among numerous other military awards and recognitions, he plans the release of his latest historical effort, “Presidents and Generals,” next year, chronicling the highest levels of American civil-military relations. Formerly a professor and chief of West Point’s history department and an expert on military history, Matthew Moten provides lectures and presentations on military history and civil-military relations. He also directed the forthcoming release of “The West Point History of Warfare” e-textbook project, and served as editor of “Between War and Peace: How America Ends Its Wars.”

After earning his Ph.D. in history from Rice University, Matthew Moten taught at the U.S. Military Academy for a number of years. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Pentagon as a speechwriter and later legislative advisor to the chief of staff of the Army. In 2005, Matthew Moten operated as deputy commander of Task Force Dragon, Multi-National Corps-Iraq during high-profile counterinsurgency operations. Matthew Moten’s travels during his career have taken him to six continents.
