The POCUS Atlas is a collaborative and open-source atlas of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) images.

My goal is to advance the role of ultrasound in medicine by merging innovative technologies with medical education.

My research asks how technology can make point-of-care ultrasound more accurate, accessible, and scalable, pursued through three linked programs: ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia in the emergency department, venous congestion assessment with VExUS (including an AI waveform-interpretation tool I co-developed), and AI-guided ultrasound for austere and resource-limited environments. I have authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications, including work in JAMA Network Open, Chest, Critical Care, and Academic Emergency Medicine, and was named SAEM's Most Impactful Researcher in 2025.

This work has been supported by more than $2.2 million in federally funded research. I served as Co-Investigator on a Department of Defense study of lung ultrasound in COVID-19 (2020–2022) and as Co-Principal Investigator on a DoD program (2021–2024) that built and validated deep-learning and teleguidance tools enabling combat medics to perform FAST exams. I am currently a Principal Investigator of an approximately DHS/BARDA-funded prospective clinical trial of a novel 3D ultrasound device for automated diagnosis and triage of musculoskeletal injuries (2025–present), and of a industry-funded study applying 3D ultrasound to thoracic trauma diagnosis (2026–present).

Alongside this grant funding, I lead contracted research with two ultrasound manufacturers. Under an investigator-initiated research agreement with Butterfly Network, my team has studied AI-assisted ultrasound skill retention in novice users and deep-learning cardiac and lung ultrasound, and evaluate new Compass AI and workflow features across our system-wide deployment. Under research and loaner-equipment agreements with Mindray, we completed a validation study of AI tools and launched an emergency department resuscitative transesophageal echocardiography study in 2026.

Many of my new and outstanding projects focus on POCUS for human spaceflight and other austere circumstances.
