Melvin Peña

Hello! I'm called Melvin. I'm a recovering academic turned freelance writer for Dogster and Catster!

My contribution to scholarly discourse, "Cosmopolitan Friendship in James Boswell’s 'Journal of a Tour to Corsica,'" can be found in "1650-1850: Ideas, Aesthetics, and Inquiries in the Early Modern Era" (vol 20, October 2013).

My first piece of truly public writing, a cathartic essay about PhD candidates who don't finish the degree, "Academia's Other Untouchables," can be found on Pan Kisses Kafka.

As for creative pursuits, one of my pieces, "we'll never hunt alone", was in the The Carrack Modern Art's Winter 2015 Community Art Show. Here are the results of my 2013 art project celebrating the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who." Three pieces of my art were published in the "Raleigh Review" (vol 3, 2012-2013). There's an online art shop open at Society6, with prints, cards, shirts, phone cases, &c!

I'm also a very happy member of Durham's PopUp Chorus. I've seen it featured in USA Today, been interviewed about it on North Carolina's PBS affiliate, and written about the power of voice in fostering community for Avidly/LA Review of Books.
