Mike is a Massachusetts-based wildlife photographer who specializes in birds. He began his professional photography career in 2005 after working 27 years as a Software Engineer. In May 2011, he joined Shoot The Light Instructional Photographic Workshops as an instructor and workshop leader.
Mike strives to create images that include an artistic element and have an aesthetic appeal that transcends their role as natural history documentation. He is motivated by the never-ending challenge of finding that perfect combination of good light, cooperative subject, attractive setting, and beautiful background that results in an artistically pleasing image.
Mike's images have been featured in numerous juried art fairs and exhibits throughout New England, including the prestigious Paradise City Arts Festival. Eleven of his images have been selected for the North American Nature Photography Association's annual showcases including a Top 10 image in 2012 and five of his images have been honored in the Audubon Magazine Photography Awards including a Top 3 placement in the Professional category. He has also garnered many "Image of the Week" honors on various online forums and was a finalist for Avian Image of the Year at birdphotographers.net.
His publication credits include National Geographic, Audubon, Nature’s Best, National Wildlife Federation's Big Backyard, NANPA Currents, Palm Press, Woodmansterne Publications, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Tourist News, and the Boston Globe.
Mike’s passion for photography is rivaled only by his passion for teaching photography. His engineering background makes him especially adept at communicating complex subjects in a well organized, step by step manner that proves to be very effective for teaching photography to students at all levels.
