Mikal Smoker

As a physician assistant and clinical preceptor, Mikal Smoker focuses her work on the areas of hematology, oncology, and internal medicine. Recognized for her expertise in physician assistant practices and medical laboratories, Mikal Smoker currently lectures at The University of New Mexico School of Medicine. In addition, she has taught at The University of Utah.

Demonstrating a commitment to her industry, Mikal Ann Smoker has contributed to academic articles and research. In 2001 to 2002, she researched and wrote Current Practices in Colorectal Cancer Screening. She assisted in writing and researching Critical Thinking in Medical-Surgical Settings: A Case Study Approach, published in 2005.

Throughout the course of her career, Mikal Ann Smoker has presented numerous lectures on case studies in oncology and hematology to other medical professionals. Attending the New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants Fall Primary Care Conference, she addressed mid-level practitioners, including nurses and other physician assistants. Additionally, Ms. Smoker has discussed approaches and methods to promote healthy lifestyle for patients who have completed cancer treatment and therapy.

Actively involved in the professional community, Mikal Ann Smoker belongs to the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Academy of Physician Assistants in Oncology. She served on the House of Delegates for the American Academy of Physician Assistants from 2009 to 2010. Mikal Smoker also served as New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants’ President-Elect in 2010. At present, she operates as President of the New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants. Acknowledged for her work with patients and the community, she received an Outstanding Community Service Award from the Department of Family & Preventative Medicine at The University of Utah in 2001.
