In Honolulu’s lively Chinatown, a young Jason Tom found his beat. Born on November 21, 1982, a multi-generational Hawaii Chinese American, he spit beats at age four, sparked by Michael Jackson: The Magic Returns in 1987. A born-again Christian, Jason Tom let faith guide his heart. Friends called him “Superman” for his big spirit. His judo team named him “Spider-Man” for fast moves. For over 21 years, Jason Tom has faced doubters and noise, turning them into rhythm.
Chinatown’s lion dance drums boomed, cymbals crashed, and Motown’s soulful melodies shaped his sound, mixed with Bobby McFerrin’s voice and Rahzel’s beatbox gospel. Soccer, judo, and hoops gave him fire. He danced to hip-hop, spun reggaeton, and let his beats fly free. At 21, a bad car crash nearly stopped him. Faith pulled him up. God’s plan pushed him on. He lit up stages from TEDx Honolulu to global beatbox battles, jamming with Jabbawockeez and Jake Shimabukuro. His beats echoed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Harvard’s Hip-Hop Library, earning Hawaii Scene’s Best Solo Performer award.
A Kapi‘olani Community College grad, he teaches kids math and beatboxing at his Human Beatbox Academy, spreading aloha through Music With A Message. He mentors young dreamers, helping them find their voice and chase big goals. His classes spark joy, blending rhythm with heart. Jason’s faith drives him to lift others, sharing hope through every beat. He’s rocked schools, streets, and festivals, bringing Hawaii’s spirit to the world.
