I first kept poultry when I was about 7. A chap who came into my uncles pub told me he would give me some Golden Pheasant poults he was hatching but I never got them for some reason. Instead he gave me 6 Light sussex fowl about 6 weeks old. these little balls of fluff developed into socking great chooks about as big as me ! I next had them on a whim. I bought a broody hen (called Abigail – I think she was an ancient buff laced wyandotte) and 8 chicks – these were Marans bantams. I later moved on to Large fowl Marans and had the most evil sodding cockerel ever (he was christened Gregory Peck because of his nature) It was at this time I first became interested in the Autosexing breeds first developed by Professor RC Punnett and later carried on by Mr Michael S Pease snd duly moved over to Welbars ( a barred Welsummer that lays lovely dark brown eggs) these unfortunately were stolen just after they had started to lay so I geve it a break for several years until now. And decided that I would have a few more – this time I went for Cream Legbars, the attraction being the colour of the eggs they lay – blue! and the rest they as they say is history…
