Paul is a middle school science teacher whose work in the classroom (and outside it) focuses on student-centered learning, and progressive assessment and grading practices. He leverages experiences as a marine scientist, teacher trainer, and field trip guide, to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences.

From October 2013 to June 2014, Paul served as the Data Literacy Program Manager for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. In this role, he coordinated the creation and delivery of a curriculum that helps classroom teachers make the best use of student learning data.

After earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in Marine Science, Paul left science to become a classroom teacher. In the 12 years that followed, he earned National Board Certification and was twice recognized by his peers as Teacher of the Year. In 2009, the North Carolina Science Teachers Association chose him as one of the Outstanding Science Educators in the state.

Paul blogs at Scripted Spontaneity, and tweets as @MrScienceTeach. He is available to train administrators and classroom teachers in modern classroom assessment, technology integration, and grading practices, through his publisher Solution Tree. In November 2016, Paul published his first book with the help of co-author Bill Ferriter. His second book about A.I. prompts that can make teacher's jobs easier will be published in mid-2024.
